Sidney economic development efforts target potential businesses

SIDNEY, Neb. -  Sidney Economic Development Director Melissa Norgard gave an update on economic development activities at Tuesday's City Council Meeting. Norgard said that, “as the community continues to go through an uncertain period, economic development efforts will continued to be shifted in high gear, not all projects can be made public while initial details are being determined and discussed, but please know that as soon as details can be shared the city is sharing them.”

The manufacturing company Lukjan has employed 18 people in Sidney so far and are looking to eventually grow the location to mirror other plants that have 140 employees. The city has also been working with Agri-Plastics who are going to be hiring about 20 people in the coming weeks with the intention of future expansion in Sidney.

An agribusiness targeted marketing piece that focuses on the top producing crops in the area and the raw materials that can be used was sent to 88 companies. Sidney’s crop production, farm land, access to natural resource, abundant ground water supply and convenient centralized location are all factors for agribusiness companies looking for expansion opportunities.

An infographic marketing piece was made that includes Sidney’s demographics, climate, location, ease of access to urban markets, incentives available, and workforce skill sets. An infographic is a visually engaging way to attract and inform large audiences and are 30 times more likely to be read than text articles. The infographic will be promoted on social media and Sidney’s website.

Marketing brochures have been sent out to companies to help diversify the economy in Sidney. Companies that the city believes matches the labor skill Sidney has to offer have been targeted.

Sidney will also be applying for grants through the USDA that can be used as a revolving loan fund that will support development and expansion of small businesses.
