Panhandle and NE Colorado law enforcement stop counterfeit money spree

BIG SPRINGS, Neb. - On May 11, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Deuel County Sheriff Scott DeCoste was dispatched to Truck and Travel in Big Springs in reference to someone attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill.

Sheriff DeCoste received information from Deuel County Chief Deputy, Jerod Hahn, advising that someone also attempted to pass a counterfeit $100 bill in Julesburg, Colorado earlier that afternoon. After contacting Truck and Travel and receiving suspect information, Keith County Communications broadcasted suspect and vehicle information.

Sheriff DeCoste spoke with Sedgwick County Communications and received information regarding the suspect description. That information matched the suspect information from Big Springs Truck and Travel.

A short time later, Nebraska State Patrol, along with the Keith County Sheriff’s Office and Ogallala Police Department saw the  described suspect’s vehicle and made contact. Evidence was collected in the vehicle that linked the occupants to both Big Springs and Julesburg. All occupants were arrested and lodged in the Keith County Jail.

In Sidney, the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office checked on a similar lead involving Walmart. While searching the suspect vehicle, the receipt was located and it was found that the individuals attempted to pass counterfeit currency at that location as well. It is undetermined whether or not these separate incidents/suspects are linked.

Police encourage anyone who may be concerned that counterfeit money is being used to contact local law enforcement.
