Additional funding granted for Highby Forest Products

SIDNEY, Neb. - It was announced in mid-April that Sidney would soon be the home of a new startup sporting goods company that would begin operating out of a facility on Greenwood Road. Since that time, Highby Outdoors has begun their process of moving into the former Anderson Forest Products facility, and has taken ownership of the pallet and shipping container company in a separate division now known as Highby Forest Products. Both divisions will be run as separate entities.

At Tuesday’s Sidney City Council meeting, Council approved the expansion of Economic Development Funding for the Forest Products division. The decision gives Highby Forest Products an extra $22,500 per year to work with over a three-year time span. In total, the company will receive $67,500 over that time frame.

Both Sidney Economic Development Director, Melissa Norgard, and City Manager, Ed Sadler, brought the idea before the Council with the intent to allow for more job creation and facility upgrades.

“They’re going to utilize the funding to help purchase some equipment and they’re also going to revamp how the space is set up,” Norgard noted. “They’ll be moving some things around, making updates to the space, and this funding will help them out.”

The funds also allow Highby Forest Products to hire 10 new employees to the current staff of four. Outside of just trying to assist a new business through the startup process, Norgard believes this move could result in a chain reaction in the area.

“This is going to be a positive step in the right direction for the community,” Norgard said. “They work closely with Lukjan and are getting more business from Agri-Plastics so as those businesses grow, Highby Forest Products will also be able to continue to grow.”
